Hi Simone, apples are better here because they’re more round and will stand up straight when baking in the in the oven. If you favor pears, you’ll love my maple vanilla baked pears instead.

Hi Frieda, see recipe notes regarding make ahead options. We don’t recommend preparing the baked apples ahead of time to serve later. They brown and become mushy, fast. Instead, prepare the filling in advance, cover, and refrigerate for up to 3 days before spooning into the apples and baking.

I also should’ve probably tripled the ingredients for the filling as I didn’t have enough, my apples would’ve needed to be much smaller. I was ultimately disappointed as the apple to filling ratio to me was off, and I don’t think Honey crisp is a good apple for baking since it’s on the drier side. If I do make this again I’ll probably use small/medium and sweeter apples to hopefully cook better, then increase the filling. I may also use apple juice to pour in the dish too as there weren’t really any juices from my apples to baste with, just plain hot water.

I LOVE this recipe. I’ve found the greatest success coring the apples with a metal melon baller. Other things I’ve done is use cosmic crisp apples and ½ cup oats instead of ¼ cup (personal preference). This recipe is a staple in my home during the cooler months. Absolutely delicious!

I love the oats mixed with brown sugar and cinnamon. I left out the nutmeg for personal preference and added the nuts and raisins.
